This year's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Fair at Scales Elementary had a unique twist.

In an effort to be environmentally friendly, fifth graders were challenged to use the engineering and design process to turn trash into treasure and create a product that could solve a specific problem.

Using items they found at home like bottle caps, toilet paper rolls and old CDs, the students created working prototypes which they presented to their families and fellow students at the STEM Fair on November 17.
