Athletics
Interscholastic activities in Williamson County Schools are an important part of the overall educational process. The athletic programs offer students expanded learning opportunities including self-discipline, self-esteem and teamwork. Students who participate in extracurricular activities tend to get higher grades, have better attendance and pose fewer discipline problems.

Attendance
Daily attendance for students is based on meaningful student engagement and interaction in each class, in addition to assignment completion. The state expectation for learning in online schools is that students engage in a 6 ½-hour instructional day, mirroring the daily engagement for students in traditional schools. In order to be counted present in a scheduled class, students must log-in to Schoology each day in each course while submitting required daily lessons. Parents should notify the Vanguard Virtual High School attendance secretary before the absence occurs or as early as possible.
Excused and Unexcused Absences
To excuse any absence, parent(s)/guardian(s) must email the attendance secretary. The email must be sent from the parent(s)/guardian(s) email address that is listed in the Skyward Family Access account. Medical notes should be attached to the email for any medically excused absences. Williamson County Schools Board Policy 6.200 defines excused and unexcused absences. In order to receive an excused absence from online learning, the parent/guardian or student is responsible for submitting the appropriate documentation for those categories defined in Policy 6.200, which includes:
1. Personal illness/injury (may require a medical note);
2. Illness of immediate family member which requires absence of the student from school (may require a doctor’s statement)
3. Death in the immediate family of the student (should not exceed 5 days)
4. Extreme weather conditions
5. Religious holidays regularly observed by people of the student’s faith (may require a statement from the minister or other person recognized by the given religious group)
6. Pregnancy
7. School-endorsed activities
8. Summons, subpoena, or court order
9. Circumstances which in the judgment of the principal warrant absence from school and over which the student has no control.
Student attendance can be viewed via Family Access in Skyward. Attendance codes in Skyward are as follows:
● W- Teacher Entered Unexcused
● A-Excused
